How To Diagnose a Garage Door Opener

Step 1: Does it open?

Yes: Continue to step 2

No: Check to see if the Emergency release has been pulled. If it has, re-engage it and try opening the door again. If the release was not pulled, pull it. Try to open the door manually.

Did it open?

If not, look above the door, if you see springs, check if they are broken. check the cables on the sides as well. if either a spring or cable is broken, contact your local garage door expert.

If the door did open, re-attach the opener and try to open it again. If it opens continue to step 2. If not, Contact your local garage door expert.

Step 2: Does it close?

No: When you try to close it, do the lights blink? if the lights are blinking when you try to close the door, it means there is something obstructing the photo-eyes (safety sensors). Clear any obstructions between the sensors. if the door closes, you have fixed the issue.

Other common issues:

Garage door won’t open/close all the way : Travel settings may not be set correctly. Contact your local garage door expert.

Garage door closes, then opens right away: Force settings need to be adjusted. Contact your local garage door expert.

Remotes/Keypad stopped working: Batteries may be dead. try replacing batteries. if that does not work, contact your local garage door expert.
